1944 was a different time in America.   We'd lost 400,000 American boys to the war, trying to keep the world from being ruled by Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo.  Kids were coming home physically and mentally ruined.  Much of our workforce was depleted.   We'd just been through the worst economic nightmare in American history.   FDR expanded government and pissed off a lot of people, but led us into what would become unprecedented American prosperity.   It's not 1944 anymore.   FDR isn't in the White House.   Obama's not much, but he sure isn't a socialist.  That's pundit-talk.

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems, and then campaign against them.
