Jaco sites to locate | ||
|
Trying to locate a few Jaco sites in Broward County and wondering if anyone here can provide names, addresses, and/or clues so they can be identified. They
are:
-The pawn shop where he purchased the Bass of Doom -The hospital where his broken wrist was operated on. (After his football accident in middle school.) -Capri Courts Apartments, near Holiday Park. |

gingerman wrote:not sure which hospital it was, but am sure glad its physical therapy department was not top notch. If it had been, Jaco might have gone back to the drums and never picked up a bass and the world would have been deprived of a brilliant artist. I have read a lot of great bassists talk about Before Jaco and After Jaco. Not too many artists are the distinct measure of a moment in time when there was a phase shift in an artistic movement. Jaco, obviously, was one of those rare artists. My pure guess is that the hospital could have been Holy Cross or Broward General as I don't know if Imperial Point or North Ridge were even around back then. These would be the hospitals closest to Oakland Park. North Ridge closed up a few years ago and I think it is part of Holy Cross. Even if the hospital still had the records (doubtful), Florida's patient confidentiality laws would keep you from learning if he was a patient at a hospital. |

Hi Gingerman,
Try asking Jaco's brother Rory on the Jacopastorius website. He posts there pretty regularly under the name RMP.

JACO MURAL | ||
|
This morning a film crew started to document the painter Ciccio as he begins his tedious but inspirational project of painting a mural on the walls of the
Community Center at Jaco Pastorius Park. An example of the mural is the long rectangle piece you can see in the video of the Community Center dedication.

Very nice. You and your family should be proud; this is a very deserving homor of Jaco's memory. BTW, The Essential JP cd is almost always in my car's
cd changer.

If I ever get back to South Florida, Jaco's park is a "must" stop for me. I hope he's haunting the place.

Tonight's episode of "Bones".
Season 4, Episode 21 - Aired: 4/16/2009 Mayhem on a Cross Brennan and Booth delve into the world of death metal music in an effort to discover who killed the bassist of an underground/ death metal band, whose skeleton was found being used as a stage prop by another death metal band in Norway. Meanwhile, Sweets is working on the book he's writing about Brennan and Booth, and asks Dr. Gordon Wyatt for some input. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So one of the characters is interviewing the replacement bass player, "person of interest". He makes a couple of comments like (not exact quotes), "you're a great bass player, you've had musical training. You play like Jaco Pastorius". I almost fell out of my seat. |

Hi Ken!
First time I saw Brendan Frasier in the early 90's I thought exactly that, his facial features reminded me of Jaco. Needless to say...I've had a "crush" on him. :0) Also want to inform you that the official park website is up @ http://www.ilovejaco.org/ There you can see an example of the mural that is taking shape on the outside walls of the Jaco Pastorius Community Center, and you can see photos of the mural process and progress at http://www.myspace.com/grassrootsop or http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewAlbums&friendID=221026991

Ingrid--Thanks for the links. It's so great that JPCC is where it is. I hope young Jaco fans who find out about this can appreciate that this is real. It
isn't hype. This really was Jaco's neighborhood. He really was a part of it and it a part of him. Jaco symbolizes the best of what South Florida is
about. He loved the culture and environment there. He never tried to rise above it. His music was a synthesis of all that was there. Jaco's music was south
florida jazz, garage band, rock, blues, r&b, funk, carribean, reggae, bebop, hard-bop, swing, jazz-fusion, gospel, punk. He gave people everywhere a taste
of South Florida Soul Stew. He was Broward County's musical ambassador to the world. Anyone and everyone anywhere and everywhere can still hear the spirit
of Lauderdale and feel it in his music. Jaco deserved to have a tangible and enduring monument to his spirit in Fort Lauderdale. Now in the park, he's got
it! He immortalized Liberty City and Dania and Dixie Highway and Teen Town/Pompano Beach forever! Hooray for the Jaco Pastorius Community Center!

Indeed!!! Well said, wonderful cat...but where were you when we needed to convince the commissioners? :0) Though it is a moot point at this time, the Park has
been named, but it was very disappointing (and surprising) that NONE of Jaco's original and old friends showed up for any of the City meetings when Robert
Rutherford and I were trying say all the right things to educate and convince the residents and commissioners of Oakland Park. Finally, for the third and final
meeting of having that opportunity, after begging via emails, about 10 good folks showed up, still none of the "early years" friends. Then, it
wasn't until the 4th meeting when we already knew they were going to vote positively, was it when a socalled "friend" jumped on the band wagon,
asking me to step out, saying that Robert and I had "done enough, anything more would only be counter productive"....LOL! Bottom line, it is Robert
Rutherford who started the process, contacted those who were willing to help him, printed all the flyers and petitions, as well as set up an online petition
site, also keeping us all informed via the photos you see on here, and only his (Robert's) signature is on the official application requesting to name the
Park after Jaco. A job well done, the City now knows who Jaco is, and they are driven to educate their residents, especially the young ones...this is only the
beginning! Let's help bring music to the Park! The mural will be wonderful, even though above referenced "friend" has been trying to replace
Cicico (the artist) in midstream with his "own" artist, making it all very uncomfortable for everyone. But nothing can stop it now! Donations will
soon be requested at www.ilovejaco.org, so that Mainstreet can get the funds needed to get materials for the mural, or any future projects to enhance the Park,
so please continue to check the site, hopefully to find a way to support the fund drive. THANK YOU!!!

Touche! I haven't been to South Florida since 1994. I live up in North Florida near Tallahassee and I rarely travel. But I'm glad the park went
forward and I will check the the ilovejaco website in the future to see how I can support the projects.
